The best customer service chatbots in 2026 answer from your own help content, hand a customer to a person without making them repeat themselves, and open a ticket when the problem needs fixing. Intercom and Zendesk are strongest for ticket-heavy teams, Tidio and Crisp for small teams on a budget, and HiQBot for customers who write on WhatsApp, Instagram and other chat apps.
We make HiQBot, so read this list knowing that. Every feature, channel and price below comes from the vendor's own pricing page, read on 31 October 2026; HiQBot's comes from our live pricing the same day. We did not run a support desk on the other seven, and prices change, so check the linked pages before you buy.
The short answer
- Intercom, for a support team that wants an AI agent and a helpdesk from one vendor and accepts per-outcome billing.
- Zendesk, for teams already running on tickets and a help center.
- Freshchat, for a free start with up to 10 agents and AI added later per session.
- Tidio or Crisp, for a small team that wants a free plan and an AI agent on a modest budget.
- Text, the company behind LiveChat, for website live chat with an AI agent and ticketing.
- Chatbase, for an AI agent trained on your content quickly, with voice on paid plans.
- HiQBot, for support on WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and LINE as well as the website, in one inbox.
What chatbots in customer service actually do
A customer service chatbot answers customers in chat, usually with AI trained on your help articles, policies and website, and passes the conversation to a person when it cannot help. The older kind followed buttons and keywords; the current kind reads the question, answers from your material and often acts on it, for example by checking an order or opening a ticket.
Chatbots in customer service are good at the repeated questions: opening hours, delivery times, returns, how to reset something. They are weak where judgement or money is involved, which is why the handover to a person matters as much as the AI.

How to choose a customer support chatbot
- Where it gets its answers: your help center, documents and website, or only what you type into a builder.
- What happens when it does not know: a person in the same chat, a ticket, or a dead end.
- Whether it can act: look up an order, change a booking, open a ticket, not only reply.
- Channels: the apps your customers already use, on the plan you would buy.
- How the AI is billed: per seat, per outcome, per session, per conversation or a fixed allowance.
- What you learn from it: the questions it could not answer, so you can fill the gaps.
The eight customer service chatbots
Intercom
An AI-first customer service platform built around the Fin AI Agent, with a shared inbox and ticketing. The pricing page names the web messenger and email, with WhatsApp, SMS and phone pay as you go. Seats start at $19 a month billed annually and Fin costs from $0.99 per outcome. Strong where support volume is high and the team lives in Intercom; watch both meters as volume grows.
Zendesk
Ticketing, AI agents, a help center, messaging and voice in one suite. The AI draws on your knowledge base and help center articles, and agents take over in live chat or tickets. Support Team is $19 per agent a month billed yearly ($25 monthly). The natural choice for a team whose support already runs on Zendesk tickets.
Freshchat
Freshworks' live chat product, free for up to 10 agents with a web and mobile widget, shared inbox and email. WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, LINE and SMS start on Growth, at $19 per agent a month billed annually, and the Freddy AI Agent is charged at $49 per 100 sessions. A good fit for a team that wants to start free and pay for AI by use.
Tidio
Live chat, ticketing and the Lyro AI Agent, which learns from FAQs you upload and pages it reads from your site and hands over to a person. There is a free plan; Starter is $24.17 a month for 100 billable conversations. The easiest start for a small website.
Crisp
A support suite with an AI agent called Hugo. The free plan has two seats and no AI credits; paid plans add email, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, LINE and more, from $45 a month per workspace with four seats. Worth a look for a small team that wants many channels without per-seat pricing at the start.
Text (LiveChat)
LiveChat now sells as Text: live chat with an AI Agent, a shared inbox and ticketing, on the website, in-app, Messenger and SMS. There is no free plan, but a 14-day trial without a card. Essential is $19 per user a month billed annually. Best for website support where people still answer most chats.
Chatbase
An AI agent platform for chat, email and voice support, trained on your content and resynced automatically, with a helpdesk inbox from the Basic plan. Hobby is $32 a month billed yearly. Quick to put an AI agent live; check how much of the support workflow, such as tickets and assignment, you need around it.
HiQBot
An AI agent and live chat on website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and LINE, in one inbox. The agent answers from your documents, Google Sheets and web pages, can move or cancel a booking, check an order for a connected store and open a ticket when it cannot fix the problem. The entry plan is $49 a month for 2,500 message credits; live chat takeover, the support agent and tickets come on plans from $139 a month (both from our live pricing, 31 October 2026).
Customer service chatbot examples
Three conversations a good customer service chatbot should handle without a person:
- Where is my order: the customer gives an order number and the email used at checkout, and the chatbot reads the order's status and tracking details when the store records them.
- Moving a booking: the customer asks to change an appointment, the chatbot finds it by the email or phone it was made with and offers a free time.
- A policy question at midnight: is the coffee machine still under warranty? The chatbot answers from the warranty policy, and hands the courier question to the team because the policy does not cover it.
And one it should hand over straight away: an angry customer with a repeat problem. More worked examples by trade are on our industry pages, and the knowledge base chatbot page shows the warranty example in full.
Where HiQBot fits, and its limits
HiQBot is the right customer service chatbot when your customers write on messaging apps as much as on your website, and when you want one inbox for the AI and your team. It also shows the questions the AI could not answer, so you can add the answer once.
- No email, SMS, Slack or AI phone calls as support channels.
- No help center for customers to browse; it answers in chat from your material.
- On the entry plan, the AI takes the customer's details for follow-up instead of a live handover.
- No public API or webhooks, and no choice of AI model.
If email tickets are most of your volume, Zendesk, Intercom or Freshchat will suit you better. For a wider view, see our guide to the best AI chatbot platforms and how a helpdesk compares with an AI agent.
Common questions
What is the best chatbot software for customer service?
It depends on your channels and volume. Intercom and Zendesk suit ticket-heavy teams, Freshchat, Tidio and Crisp suit small teams that want to start free, and HiQBot suits customers who message on WhatsApp and other chat apps.
Can a chatbot replace a customer service team?
No. It can take the repeated questions and simple actions, which frees people for the conversations that need judgement. Every chatbot on this list includes a way to hand over to a person or a helpdesk.
How does handover to a person work?
The chatbot passes the conversation, with everything said so far, to a team member in the same chat or turns it into a ticket. Check whether the customer stays in the same chat and whether the agent sees the whole thread.
Can one customer service chatbot cover several channels?
Most can. On the pages we read, Freshchat, Tidio, Crisp, Chatbase and HiQBot name WhatsApp and Instagram, and Crisp and HiQBot also name Telegram and LINE. Check which channels are on the plan you would buy.
How much does a customer service chatbot cost?
On 31 October 2026 the paid plans we read started between $19 and $49 a month, billed per seat, per user, per conversation or as a flat plan. AI is often extra: Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome and Freshchat $49 per 100 Freddy sessions.
Is customer data safe with a support chatbot?
Ask each vendor where data is stored, whether it trains AI models on your conversations and how long it keeps them. HiQBot does not use customer data to train models and masks email addresses and phone numbers in the text the AI reads.
