Best AI chatbot platforms in 2026: 9 tools compared by channel, builder and billing

The best AI chatbot platforms in 2026 fall into three kinds, and the right one depends on where your customers write. Intercom and Zendesk suit a support team that already lives in tickets. Tidio is the easiest start for a small website. Botpress, Chatbase and Voiceflow are for building your own agent. respond.io and HiQBot are for businesses whose customers message on WhatsApp, Instagram and other chat apps.
We make HiQBot, so read this list knowing that. Every channel, feature and price below comes from each vendor's own pricing page, read on 31 October 2026. ManyChat's site refused our reader that day, so it has no row; our ManyChat comparison covers it separately. We did not run a live business on the other tools, and prices change, so check each linked page before you buy.
The short answer
- Intercom or Zendesk, for a support team with a ticket queue that wants an AI agent in front of it.
- Tidio, for a small business that wants a free plan and live chat on its website.
- ChatBot.com, for a no-code chatbot builder with live chat and ticketing included.
- Chatbase, for a quick AI agent trained on your own content, with voice on paid plans.
- Botpress or Voiceflow, for a team that wants to design and build its own agent.
- respond.io, for a team inbox on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, billed by active contacts.
- HiQBot, for customers who write on WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and LINE as much as on the website, with an AI agent tuned to your industry and live chat behind it.

What an AI chatbot platform is, and the three kinds
An AI chatbot platform is software that answers your customers in chat using AI, usually trained on your own documents and website, and passes the conversation to a person when it should. It replaces the automated chatbot of a few years ago, which could only follow buttons and keywords someone had scripted.
The chatbot companies on this list sell three different things under the same name:
- Support suites with AI: a helpdesk or live chat product with an AI agent added in front. Intercom, Zendesk, Tidio and ChatBot.com.
- AI agent builders: tools for designing and training an agent you then put on your channels. Botpress, Voiceflow and Chatbase.
- Messaging-first inboxes: one inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram and other chat apps, with AI and a team working in it. respond.io and HiQBot.
Six things to check before you choose
- Channels: is every app your customers use on the plan you would buy, or only on a higher tier or as an extra?
- What the AI answers from: your documents and website, your help centre, or only what you type into a builder.
- What happens when it does not know: a person in the same chat, a ticket, or nothing.
- Who builds it: you in a no-code editor, a developer, or nobody, because it comes ready for your trade.
- The billing unit: per seat, per conversation, per outcome, per active contact or a fixed allowance.
- What it does after the answer: book an appointment, take an order, capture a lead or open a ticket.
The nine AI chatbot platforms
Intercom
An AI-first customer service platform built around its Fin AI agent, with a shared inbox and ticketing behind it. Its pricing page names the web messenger, live chat and email, with WhatsApp, SMS and phone on a pay-as-you-go basis, and a workflows builder on the Advanced plan. Seats start at $19 a month billed annually, and Fin is charged from $0.99 per outcome on top. Best for support teams who want the AI and the helpdesk from one vendor. Watch the two meters: seats and outcomes both grow with volume.
Zendesk
Customer service software with ticketing, AI agents, a help center, messaging and voice. The AI draws on your knowledge base and help center articles, and agents take over in live chat or tickets. Zendesk describes a low-code action builder rather than a no-code chatbot builder. Support Team starts at $19 per agent a month billed yearly ($25 monthly). Best for teams that already run on tickets.
Tidio
Live chat, ticketing, the Lyro AI agent and a visual Flows builder for websites, with Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and email integrations. Lyro learns from FAQs you upload and pages it scrapes from your site, and hands over to a person. There is a free plan; Starter is $24.17 a month for 100 billable conversations. Best for small businesses starting with website chat.
ChatBot.com
An AI chatbot builder that works without coding, with live chat, an inbox and ticketing. It learns from help articles, internal documents, URLs and PDFs, and names website, in-app, Messenger, WhatsApp and SMS. Essential is $19 per user a month billed yearly ($25 monthly). Best for a team that wants a no-code builder and live chat from the same company.
Chatbase
An AI agent platform for chat, email and voice support, trained on your content and resynced automatically. Its plans name Slack, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, with a helpdesk inbox from the Basic plan. Hobby is $32 a month billed yearly. Best for getting an agent trained on your material live quickly. Its pricing page does not name a visual builder.
Botpress
Botpress Studio is a visual AI agent builder, and Botpress Desk is its AI helpdesk. Channels named include webchat, WhatsApp, Slack and Viber, with voice in the Enterprise plan. There is a free plan with 100 conversations; Plus is $150 a month billed annually. Best for teams with someone who wants to design the agent in detail.
Voiceflow
An AI agent platform for building and deploying agents for voice and chat, aimed at enterprise customer experience teams and agencies. Its pricing page asks businesses to request a price and bills agencies by usage. Best for larger teams building their own agents across voice and chat.
respond.io
An AI-powered customer conversation platform and team inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, plus chat, email and calls. It prices by monthly active contacts: Starter is $79 a month billed yearly ($99 billed monthly), with workflows on Growth. Best for sales and support teams working mainly on WhatsApp. Its pricing page does not name Telegram or LINE.
HiQBot
A conversational platform for customer service: an AI agent and live chat on website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and LINE, in one inbox. The agent comes tuned for industries such as ecommerce, hotels, real estate and SaaS, answers from your documents, Google Sheets and web pages, and books, takes orders, captures leads or hands over to your team. The entry plan is $49 a month for 2,500 message credits, read from our own pricing on 31 October 2026, with a 7-day trial. Best for businesses whose customers write on messaging apps. Its limits are listed further down.
No-code chatbot platform or developer platform?
A no-code chatbot platform lets someone without engineering skills set up the bot in an editor. ChatBot.com and Tidio describe no-code or visual builders, and Botpress Studio is visual but deep enough that a technical person usually drives it. Voiceflow sits at the agency and enterprise end.
There is a third route that skips the chatbot builder entirely: an agent that already knows your trade, so you add your material and your channels instead of designing every question. That is how HiQBot works, and it is why it has no drag-and-drop builder for the AI agent. If you want to design every branch yourself, a chatbot builder is the better fit.
Where HiQBot fits, and its limits
HiQBot is strongest where customers write on WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and LINE as well as the website, and where you want the AI to finish the job: a booked appointment, an order, a qualified lead. Its WhatsApp broadcasts, Instagram comment-to-DM, built-in CRM and knowledge gaps report sit in the same product. Credits are prepaid, so nothing bills past the allowance.
Its limits, so you can rule it out quickly:
- No email, SMS, Slack or AI voice calls as channels.
- No public API, webhooks or Zapier connection.
- No choice of AI model and no way to bring your own key.
- No free plan; the trial lasts 7 days and needs a card.
- No drag-and-drop builder for the AI agent; guided flows run on the messaging apps, not on website chat.
How each AI chatbot platform bills
The billing unit often matters more than the starting price, because it decides what happens as you grow. From the pages we read:
- Per seat or agent: Intercom, Zendesk, ChatBot.com.
- Per AI outcome on top of seats: Intercom's Fin.
- Per conversation allowance: Tidio and Botpress.
- Per monthly active contact: respond.io.
- Flat monthly plans: Chatbase, and HiQBot with a monthly allowance of message credits.
- On request: Voiceflow.
Price two or three platforms against your real numbers: conversations a month, people on the team and contacts you message. For an online store, our list of the best AI chatbots for ecommerce goes further on catalogue and order features.
Common questions
What is the best AI chatbot platform?
There is no single best one. Intercom and Zendesk are strongest for ticket-heavy support teams, Tidio for a small website, Botpress and Voiceflow for building your own agent, and respond.io and HiQBot for customers on WhatsApp and other chat apps.
Is there a free chatbot for my website?
Yes. Tidio and Botpress both list a free plan on their pricing pages, with limits on conversations. HiQBot and several others offer a trial instead.
What is the difference between a chatbot builder and an AI chatbot platform?
A chatbot builder is the editor where you design the bot. An AI chatbot platform is the whole product: the AI, the channels, the inbox where people take over, and the reports. Some platforms include a builder, others come ready to answer from your own material.
Can one chatbot platform cover my website, WhatsApp and Instagram?
Several can. Tidio, Chatbase, respond.io and HiQBot all name WhatsApp and Instagram alongside website or web chat. Check that each channel is on the plan you would buy, and that the AI answers there from the same material.
How much does an AI chatbot platform cost?
On the pages we read on 31 October 2026, paid plans started between $19 and $150 a month, billed by seat, conversation, contact or a fixed allowance, and Voiceflow showed no public price. Per-outcome charges, such as Intercom's $0.99 for each Fin outcome, come on top.
Do I need a developer to build an automated chatbot?
Not for most of these. ChatBot.com, Tidio and HiQBot are set up without code. Botpress and Voiceflow reward a technical person who wants control over every step.
