Chatbot pricing in 2026: what 12 platforms charge and how each pricing model works

Chatbot pricing for small and mid-sized businesses ranged from free to about $150 a month for the entry paid plans we read on 31 October 2026, before AI usage. The bigger difference is the pricing model: per seat, per conversation, per AI outcome, per contact or a flat allowance. The model decides what you pay as you grow.
We make HiQBot, so read this with that in mind. Every price below is copied from the vendor's own pricing page on 31 October 2026, with its billing basis; HiQBot's comes from our live pricing the same day. Prices change, so check each page before you buy.
How much does a chatbot cost?
A chatbot from a software platform costs from nothing on a free plan to around $150 a month on the entry paid plans we compared, with AI often charged on top by the conversation, session or outcome. Enterprise plans are usually priced on request. A chatbot built for you by an agency or developer is a project with its own budget, plus hosting and AI costs every month.
Most businesses do not need the custom route. If your customers ask the same questions and you want answers, bookings or leads in chat, a platform will cost less and be live sooner.
The seven chatbot pricing models
- Per seat, agent or user: you pay for each person on the team. Predictable while the team is small; grows with headcount. Zendesk, ChatBot.com and Intercom's seats work this way.
- Per AI outcome or resolution: you pay each time the AI settles a conversation. Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome. Fair when volume is low, expensive when it is high.
- Per conversation or session: a bundle of AI conversations each month. Tidio, Smartsupp, Freshchat's Freddy and Botpress use versions of this.
- Per monthly active contact: you pay for each person you talk to in a month, as respond.io does. Suits teams with fewer customers and more conversations each.
- Per workspace: a flat fee for a team, with seats included, as Crisp does. Good for small teams.
- Flat plan or credit allowance: a fixed monthly price with a set amount of usage, as Chatbase and HiQBot do. The easiest to budget.
- Quote only: enterprise platforms such as Voiceflow, where the price depends on the contract.

Entry prices are not comparable on their own: a $19 seat with AI charged per outcome can cost more than a $49 flat plan once the AI is busy, and less when it is quiet. Our guides to the best AI chatbot platforms and the best live chat software cover what each tool does beyond the price.
Which chatbot pricing model fits your size
One person running the business
You need the AI to answer while you work, and you will not add seats. A free plan to start, then a flat plan or a small conversation bundle, keeps the bill steady. Per-seat pricing matters less here than what the AI does on its own: whether it books, takes orders or captures leads without you.
A small team of two to five
People now answer chats too, so seats start to count. Workspace pricing with seats included, or a flat plan that includes live chat, usually beats paying per agent plus AI on top. Check which channels each plan includes, because this is often the size where WhatsApp and Instagram become essential.
A support team with steady volume
Per-seat helpdesks with AI by the outcome or session are built for this. Model three months of real volume before you commit: an AI that settles more conversations is good news for the team and a bigger line on a per-outcome bill.
An enterprise
Expect a quote, security reviews and a contract. Ask for the price at your expected volume in writing, and for what happens to it if volume doubles.
Questions to ask any vendor about chatbot pricing
- What counts as a conversation, a session or an outcome, and who decides?
- What happens when I run out: the AI stops, or the bill goes up?
- Which channels are on this plan, and which cost extra?
- Is the headline price monthly, or the monthly equivalent of a yearly payment?
- Do unused conversations or credits carry over?
Chatbot costs that are easy to miss
- AI usage on top of the plan: per outcome, per session or per conversation once the bundle runs out.
- Channels on higher plans: WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger are often not on the entry plan.
- WhatsApp message fees: Meta bills these to your business directly, whichever platform you use.
- Seats you add as the team grows, and whether live chat seats cost extra.
- Annual billing: many headline prices are monthly equivalents of a yearly payment.
- Time: writing the answers, testing and reading transcripts in the first weeks.
How to estimate your own chatbot cost
A chatbot cost calculator needs four numbers, all of which you can pull from last month:
- Conversations a month, and how many the AI should finish on its own.
- People who will answer chats.
- Unique contacts you talk to in a month.
- Channels you need, and whether WhatsApp is one of them.
Put those into the pricing model of each shortlisted tool. Per-seat tools grow with people, per-outcome and per-conversation tools grow with volume, per-contact tools grow with your audience, and flat plans stay level until you outgrow the allowance.
Platform or custom build?
A platform is a monthly subscription for a product that is already built: the AI, the channels, the inbox and the reports. A custom build is a project where a team builds a chatbot around your own systems, then you pay for hosting and AI usage. Choose custom only when a platform cannot connect to something you depend on. We also do custom AI agent development for that case.
How HiQBot prices
HiQBot sells flat monthly plans with an allowance of message credits. The entry plan is $49 a month ($490 a year) for 2,500 credits, with the AI agent on website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and LINE. Plans with live chat and support tickets start at $139 a month for 6,000 credits. One AI reply draws one to eight credits depending on the AI level you choose for each inbox, so 2,500 credits is 2,500 replies only at the lightest level.
Nothing bills past the allowance: AI replies pause when credits run out, and you can add a credit pack. On monthly plans, unused credits carry over for two billing periods if the plan renews on time. HiQBot does not count contacts and does not charge per outcome. Meta bills WhatsApp message fees to you directly. Full details are on HiQBot pricing.
Common questions
How much does a chatbot cost per month?
From free to about $150 a month for the entry paid plans we compared on 31 October 2026, with AI usage often extra. Enterprise plans are usually quoted on request.
What is the cheapest AI chatbot?
Several tools have free plans, including Tidio, Freshchat, Crisp, Smartsupp and Botpress, each with limits on seats, conversations or AI. The cheapest paid AI option we read was Smartsupp's Mira AI Agent at $16 a month billed annually for 100 conversations.
Is per-outcome or per-seat chatbot pricing better?
Per seat suits a small team with high chat volume. Per outcome suits low volume with a large team. A flat plan suits anyone who wants the bill to be the same every month.
How does conversational AI pricing differ from live chat pricing?
Live chat is usually priced per person answering. Conversational AI is priced by what the AI does: conversations, outcomes or credits. Many tools now combine both on one bill.
Do I pay WhatsApp fees on top of chatbot pricing?
Yes. Meta charges for WhatsApp business messages and bills your business directly. The chatbot platform's price does not include them.
