Best conversational AI platforms in 2026: 7 compared for chat and messaging

A conversational AI platform is software that answers your customers in chat on its own, from your own material, and passes the conversation to a person when it should. The best one depends on where your customers write and who answers today. Intercom Fin and Zendesk AI agents suit teams already running a helpdesk. respond.io suits mid-sized consumer brands selling on messaging apps. Tidio Lyro is the easiest start for a website. Kore.ai and Yellow.ai are built for large enterprises. HiQBot suits a business that wants an AI agent and live chat together on website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and LINE.
We make HiQBot, so read this list knowing that. To keep it fair, every fact about the other six comes from the vendor's own page, read on 31 October 2026 and linked below. We did not run our own business on their products, and where a figure is the vendor's own, we say so. This guide covers chat and messaging: website chat, messaging apps, social inboxes and email.
The short answer
There is no single best conversational AI. These are the best fits by situation, from what each vendor says about itself:
- Your support team already lives in Intercom or another helpdesk: Intercom Fin, which works with Intercom and with Salesforce, Zendesk, HubSpot and Freshdesk.
- You run Zendesk: Zendesk AI agents, included in its Suite and Support plans.
- A consumer brand selling on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger at volume: respond.io, which describes itself as built for teams with more than 500 conversations a month.
- A small website that wants AI answers with little setup: Tidio Lyro.
- A large enterprise building many agents with governance: Kore.ai or Yellow.ai.
- A business that wants the AI agent, live chat and guided flows in one inbox across six chat channels: HiQBot.

What a conversational AI tool actually does
A conversational AI tool reads what a customer writes, works out what they want, and answers from your own documents, product lists and policies. Unlike a menu bot, it copes with questions nobody scripted. A good one also does something with the answer, such as booking an appointment, taking an order, opening a ticket or qualifying a lead, and it knows when to bring in a person.
Conversational AI solutions on the market fall into three broad groups:
- Helpdesk AI agents sit inside a support platform and resolve tickets and chats, like Fin and Zendesk AI agents.
- Messaging-first platforms combine an inbox for WhatsApp, Instagram and other apps with AI agents, like respond.io and HiQBot.
- Enterprise agent builders give large companies a studio to design, govern and run many agents across departments, like Kore.ai and Yellow.ai.
Many vendors also sell conversational AI as a service, with their team building the agents for you. That suits a business without the time to set one up. See what an AI agent does in customer service for the parts every platform shares.
Seven things to check before you choose conversational AI software
- Channels where your customers already write. A platform strong on email does little for a clinic whose patients message on WhatsApp. List your channels first and rule out anything that misses one.
- How a person takes over. Check whether a teammate can join the same chat with the history attached, what the customer is told outside working hours, and whether the AI can take details when nobody is free.
- What it learns from. Files, website pages, help articles, product lists. Ask how you correct an answer it got wrong.
- What it can do, beyond answering. Bookings, orders, tickets, lead qualification. An answer that ends in "someone will get back to you" is a missed sale.
- The pricing unit. Per conversation, per resolution, per credit or per seat. Work out what a busy month costs, and whether the bill can grow on its own.
- Setup effort. Some platforms are live in an afternoon; enterprise builders expect a project team.
- Language and data. Whether it replies in your customers' languages, and where your data is kept.
The seven conversational AI platforms
Intercom Fin
Fin is Intercom's customer-facing AI agent, offered in versions for service, sales, ecommerce and success. Its page says it works on chat, email, Slack and social channels, hands conversations to your team with the context kept, and runs natively in Intercom or alongside Salesforce, Zendesk, HubSpot, Freshdesk and other helpdesks. It learns from its own conversations and suggests improvements you can approve. Intercom reports an average resolution rate of 76%, which is its own figure. Pricing is based on outcomes; the page shows no amount, and data can be hosted in the US, EU or Australia.
Best for: a support team that wants a strong AI agent on top of the helpdesk it already uses. fin.ai · our Intercom comparison
Zendesk AI agents
Zendesk describes its AI agents as "built for resolution", learning from every outcome. They work across web, mobile, social and email, and send a conversation that needs a person to the right team with the context attached. They are included in every Suite and Support plan, priced on successful outcomes, with an allowance of resolutions in each plan and more available to buy.
Best for: a service team that already runs Zendesk. zendesk.com
respond.io
respond.io's AI agents qualify leads, answer product and stock questions from websites, PDFs and tables, book appointments and read images and PDFs, on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram, Viber, LINE and other channels. Teammates can take over any conversation, and chats route by role, availability or workload. It has native HubSpot and Salesforce connections on its higher plans. respond.io is direct about fit: it says it is built for consumer brands with high-volume sales conversations, and is not a fit for businesses with fewer than 500 conversations a month. AI runs on credits, with extra usage billed and capped at twice the monthly allowance.
Best for: a mid-sized consumer business with a sales team on messaging apps. respond.io · our respond.io comparison
Tidio Lyro
Lyro is Tidio's AI agent. It learns from your support content, which it reads automatically, and replies in the Tidio chat widget on your website. When a question is outside what it knows, it passes it to a person or creates a ticket, and it can connect to Zendesk, Intercom, Salesforce and other tools. On 31 October 2026 its page priced Lyro at $0.50 per conversation, with the first 50 conversations free.
Best for: a small business that mainly needs answers on its website. tidio.com
Kore.ai
Kore.ai sells an enterprise platform for building, governing and improving AI agents, with service agents for customer channels, enterprise search, and agents for HR, IT and long-running processes. Its homepage shows large customers such as AT&T, Coca-Cola, Cigna, MetLife and Bosch, and SOC, HIPAA, GDPR and PCI DSS badges. No pricing is shown.
Best for: a large enterprise with a team to design and govern many agents. kore.ai
Yellow.ai
Yellow.ai offers an agentic platform for customer and employee experience, with an AI agent builder, a conversational knowledge base, analytics and agent assist, over chat, email and other channels. It lists 150+ integrations, including Salesforce, Zendesk, Freshdesk and HubSpot, and says it is trusted by 650+ global brands. Pricing is on a separate page, not its homepage.
Best for: an enterprise that wants one vendor for customer and employee assistants. yellow.ai
HiQBot
HiQBot is ours. It is a conversational platform for customer service, with AI agents and live chat on website chat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and LINE, all in one inbox. You pick your industry and the AI agent asks the questions that business needs, then books the appointment, takes the order request or the reservation request, or opens a ticket. Each channel can run on the AI, on live chat only, or on the AI with your team one step away. When the AI can't help, it hands the chat to a teammate or takes the customer's details for follow-up.
On the messaging apps it also runs guided flows with buttons and lists, where the AI answers side questions mid-flow, plus Instagram comment to DM and WhatsApp broadcasts. It answers from your files, website pages and product lists, including a linked Google Sheet, and connects to WooCommerce, HubSpot, Google Calendar and Jira.
Best for: a small or mid-sized business, such as a clinic, salon, hotel, car dealer, estate agent or online store, whose customers write on several chat apps. See it on WhatsApp
Which conversational AI platform fits which business
Conversational AI for business works best where your customers already reach you, so start from how they write to you today:
- Most conversations arrive as tickets and email: a helpdesk AI agent such as Fin or Zendesk AI agents, so the AI works where your agents already are.
- Most arrive on WhatsApp and Instagram, with a sales team behind them: a messaging-first platform. respond.io at high volume; HiQBot for a smaller team that also wants bookings, guided flows and live chat in the same place.
- Most arrive on your website and you have little time: Tidio Lyro, or any platform with a website widget you can switch on the same day.
- You are building assistants for many departments: an enterprise builder such as Kore.ai or Yellow.ai.
- You sell in a market where LINE or Telegram matters: check the channel list first. Of the seven, respond.io and HiQBot name both.
For industry examples, see HiQBot by industry and our guide to omnichannel customer service.
Where HiQBot fits, and where it does not
HiQBot fits a business that wants one tool for the AI agent and the people behind it, across website chat and five messaging apps, with bookings and orders taken in the chat. Prices are fixed monthly plans with prepaid message credits, so a busy month cannot run up a surprise bill.
It is a weaker fit if you need:
- email or SMS as a chat channel; neither is built;
- a CRM connection other than HubSpot, or Zapier, webhooks or a public API;
- knowledge synced automatically from a wiki or a document workspace;
- a helpdesk integration beyond Jira and HubSpot tickets;
- an enterprise studio for building assistants for HR or IT.
If one of those is a must, Fin, Zendesk or an enterprise builder from this list will suit you better.
Common questions
What is a conversational AI platform?
Software that answers customers in conversation, written or typed, using AI that understands what they mean, your own knowledge, and actions such as booking or creating a ticket. It usually includes a way for a person to take over and reports on how conversations end.
What is the best conversational AI for a small business?
One that covers the chat apps your customers already use and costs a predictable amount. For a website only, Tidio Lyro is a light start. For WhatsApp, Instagram and other messaging apps with bookings and live chat, HiQBot is built for that size of business.
Is a conversational AI platform the same as a chatbot platform?
They overlap. A conversational AI chatbot platform understands free text and answers from your material; an older chatbot follows a fixed menu of buttons. Most platforms in this list mix both: scripted steps where you want control and AI for everything else.
How much does conversational AI cost?
It depends on the unit. On 31 October 2026, Tidio Lyro was $0.50 per conversation, Fin and Zendesk priced AI on outcomes without a figure on the pages we read, and respond.io and HiQBot use credits within a plan. Model a busy month before you sign.
Can conversational AI replace my support team?
It can take the repeat questions and the simple bookings, which frees your team for the conversations that need judgement. Every platform here keeps a way for a person to step in, and the good ones pass over the whole conversation so the customer does not repeat themselves.
Which conversational AI works on WhatsApp?
Of the seven, respond.io and HiQBot name WhatsApp on the pages we read. If WhatsApp is your main channel, see our WhatsApp chatbot page for how guided flows, the AI agent and live chat work together there.
