Instagram comment to DM automation

Instagram comment to DM automation sends a private message to anyone who comments a word you pick under one of your posts. Someone types “price” under a launch post and a DM arrives seconds later, with nobody watching the phone. HiQBot does this on every plan, including Solo at $49 a month, and the agent that sends the first message stays in the conversation afterwards, answering from your own documents and booking the people who are ready.

Meta allows one private reply per comment, and gives you seven days from the moment the comment was written. That window, and what the conversation does once the DM lands, is where most setups quietly lose people.

How comment to DM automation works

The trigger is a word or phrase you choose. When a comment on your post contains it, the automation fires. You can put several triggers on the same post pointing at different answers, so a launch post can send the price list to one commenter and the size guide to another.

The private reply is the DM itself. This is a specific thing on Instagram and not an ordinary message: Meta lets a business open a private thread with someone who commented, even though that person has never messaged you. It is the mechanism the whole pattern runs on, and it carries limits worth reading before you build a campaign around it.

Then there is the conversation, which is everything after that. On most tools the DM is a canned message with a link in it and the story ends there. On HiQBot the reply comes from the same agent behind it that handles your website chat and WhatsApp, so it can keep going: answer the next question, work out whether this person is a buyer, and put a meeting in the calendar.

What Meta allows in 2026

Comment automation runs on Meta’s own messaging platform, so Meta’s rules decide what is possible. Most guides on this topic skip them. They are short, and getting one wrong costs you leads you will never know you lost.

Meta’s limits on Instagram private replies to comments
RuleWhat it means for you
One private message per commentYou get a single shot at each commenter. There is no automated follow-up sequence off the back of one comment.
Seven days from when the comment was createdFor a post, an ads post or a reel, the private reply has to go out inside seven days of the comment being written. After that the door is shut on that comment.
Instagram Live is differentPrivate replies to comments on a Live can only be sent while the broadcast is running. Once it ends, they stop working.

Two further rules govern the conversation instead of the trigger. A business has 24 hours to reply to someone’s message, and inside that window the reply can carry promotional content. There is a tag that stretches the window to seven days, but Meta scopes it to manually written human responses and not to automation, so it is not something a bot should lean on.

Together these say something useful about how to plan. The comment buys you one opening message and a 24-hour conversation. If that conversation is going to produce anything, the opening message has to earn a reply instead of only delivering a link.

Meta publishes both rules openly, in its private replies reference and its messaging policy overview. They move from time to time, which is why this page carries a date.

How to set it up in HiQBot

  1. 1

Connect your Instagram business account from the dashboard. Instagram is on every plan, so this works on Solo without an upgrade.

  2. 2

Give the agent something to answer from. Upload your catalogue, your sizing and your delivery terms, whatever people ask about. The agent quotes what you uploaded and says when it does not know, which beats a confident guess in a DM.

  3. 3

Write the comment rules. Choose the trigger words and what should happen when each one fires. One post can carry several.

  4. 4

Decide what the agent does once it is in the DM. Answering is the floor. It can also qualify the person, ask the two or three things you need to know before a call is worth booking, and take the booking itself.

  5. 5

Test it on a post that is already working. Comment your own trigger word from a personal account and watch the thread. One real run teaches you more than any preview.

  6. 6

Come back after a week and look at which trigger words people actually used, not the ones you expected them to use. Most rules need rewriting once, and this is where you find out how.

What happens after the DM sends

This is where the category tends to stop, and it decides whether comment automation makes you money or just makes noise.

A DM tool delivers your message and hands the conversation back to you. If forty people comment on a good post, forty DMs go out and forty people are now waiting for a human, which on a Saturday means waiting until Monday. The automation has created the pile-up it was bought to prevent.

HiQBot’s answer is that the thing sending the DM is an agent and not a template. It reads what the person writes back and answers from the documents you uploaded. Someone asks whether you ship to Ireland, or whether the jacket comes in a 42, and it answers, because that sits in the knowledge base. When the person is a real prospect it captures them as a lead, labels them hot, warm or cold, and can book the call with nobody touching it.

On Solo the agent runs all of that on autopilot and every conversation still lands in your unified inbox, so you check the closings and the bookings when it suits you. What Solo does not have is a seat for anyone else to reply — that is the proposition of the tier and not a hole in it: it is built for a business of one. From Starter you get team seats and live chat, so a conversation that needs a person goes to whoever is free and on shift, carrying the whole thread with it. From Growth the agent resolves support cases as well as selling, and anything that outlives the conversation becomes a ticket.

Where comment automation goes wrong

A post takes off and the rule keeps firing

Trigger rules do not know the difference between twenty comments and two thousand. If a reel travels, every matching comment gets a DM, and your message allowance is gone before you have noticed.

Watch the first hour of anything that starts moving, and write triggers specific enough that casual comments miss them. "Price" catches buyers. "Nice" catches everybody.

The trigger fires under a complaint

Automation replies to the comment and not to the mood of it. A keyword sitting inside an angry comment will pull that person into a DM with a cheerful sales message attached, which is worse than staying quiet.

Keep triggers to words that only turn up in a buying question, and read the comments under any post you are running rules on.

The seven-day window closes

A comment left on an old post is still a person with a question, but once it sits unnoticed past seven days the private reply will not send.

The comments that go stale are almost always on posts nobody is watching any more, so an automation that only covers this week’s post leaves money on the older ones.

The conversation outlives the 24-hour window

Someone replies, asks a question, goes quiet, then comes back three days later. Your side of that thread is now governed by a different rule than it was on day one.

This bites hardest on slow, considered purchases, and it is the strongest argument for answering properly inside the first day.

The DM says nothing

The most common failure here is not technical. A message that repeats what the caption already said gets no reply, and one reply is all the automation is allowed to ask for.

What it costs

Comment automation is on every HiQBot plan, so the entry price for it is Solo at $49 a month, or $490 for a year. That covers website chat, Instagram and WhatsApp, one seat and 2,500 credits a month, with the agent running unattended.

Starter at $139 a month adds live chat for your team and the remaining channels, which is what you want once a person is answering messages alongside the agent. Growth at $229 adds AI support resolution, tickets and WhatsApp calling. For what each channel covers and the plan it needs, see every channel we unify.

There is a 7-day free trial, and the full comparison is on the pricing page.

Set one rule on your best post

Pick the post that is already working, set one rule on it, and see what a same-hour reply does to the comments already sitting there. The rest of what the agent does on Instagram is on the social capture page.
